Breast Reconstruction Surgery in Dubai
An Overview:
Breast reconstruction is commonly performed to reconstruct breasts after mastectomy (surgery to remove breast tissue to treat or prevent breast cancer), which can result in low self-esteem. Therefore, breast reconstruction is also a breast reshaping surgery to restore symmetry after one or both of the breasts are misshaped due to trauma or surgery.
Breast reconstruction is done using an implant or flap from the body’s own tissues taken from other areas such as the belly, thighs, or buttocks. Breast reconstruction can be done right after mastectomy.

Types of breast reconstruction surgery in Dubai
There are two main types of breast reconstruction suregry :
- Flap reconstruction
- Implant reconstruction
There is one more type of breast reconstruction called oncological reconstruction. Read about each type of reconstruction method below.
Flap Reconstruction
In flap reconstruction, the surgeon extracts autologous fat (fat from the patient’s own body) to form new breasts. The flap is taken from fleshy parts such as the buttocks, thigh, or belly. In addition, the surgeon removes blood vessels, fat, skin, and muscles from these parts to form new breasts. Together, this is called a flap. There are different types of skin flaps:
DIEP Flap
The DIEP flap cut includes fat, muscles, blood vessels, and skin from the wall of the lower belly and is relocated to the chest to reconstruct breasts. The surgeon carefully reattaches the flap’s blood vessels to the chest through microsurgery.
LD Flap
Surgeon removes muscle and tissue from the back and transplants it to the chest to form breasts.
TRAM Flap
TRAM stands for transverse rectus abdominus. The TRAM flap is extracted from the lower abdomen between the waist and pubic bone.
PAP Flap
The surgeon transplants tissues from the inner and back of the thighs to make flaps for breast reconstruction. The muscle is not removed.
SIEA Flap
The procedure is like a DIEP flap, but it uses different blood vessels.
TUG Flap
Like PAP, a TUG flap uses both tissue and muscle from the inner thighs and back of the thighs.
Implant reconstruction
In implant breast reconstruction, the surgeon uses silicone implants to fashion breasts. Not only does the material of the implant matter, but its size, shape, and positioning also matter.
There are two shapes of implants, round-shaped or teardrop. The breast implant is chosen for breast reconstruction according to the patient’s preference and physique.
Our futuristic surgeons prefer Motiva Ergonomix, which is the latest 6th generation silicone implant with a gel filling. They are free in shape and lightweight and mimic the dynamics of natural breasts. These are the latest revolutionary implants designed for longevity and optimum comfort.

Oncological reconstruction
If you have had or are going to have a lumpectomy (surgery to remove cancer tissues or suspected cancer tissues from the breast), your oncologist can help your surgeon decide whether you are a candidate for oncological reconstruction or breast conservation.
In oncological reconstruction, surgeons use breast lift techniques to fill the defect created by lumpectomy and improve the breast’s shape.
However, the timing of having breast reconstruction would also depend on your lumpectomy or mastectomy. Breast reconstruction can be done simultaneously with these procedures, or the surgeon may choose to defer surgery to allow the breasts to heal properly. Sometimes it is also deferred if you have started your chemotherapy or radiation sessions as part of complete cancer treatment.
How is it done?
Breast reconstruction proceeds in the following steps:
- Anaesthesia
You will undergo general anaesthesia.
- Flap or implant reconstruction
If you have had radiotherapy or a lot of breast tissue removed, there is a chance that there is not enough tissue to hold the implants.
- Reconstruction of the nipple and areola
Women who are candidates for nipple-sparing mastectomy undergo various reconstruction techniques to restore the nipple with blood vessels. Otherwise, the areola and nipples are created by using skin folds and tattooing, giving them a realistic appearance.

Breast Reconstruction Surgery Recovery
Your recovery depends on the type of reconstruction performed. You will have pain, swelling, and bruising for the following week, and the surgeon will recommend pain-relievers for the same. Your follow-up appointment will be scheduled to watch the recovery and wound healing closely.
